Subject: some people think that government is wasting money on arts and that this money could be spent elsewhere.
To what extent do you agree with this view?
Ans:
Some people argue that spending money on arts by the government is a waste of money and this funding should be diverted to other projects. In my opinion, I completely disagree with this view as arts in many forms is a source of entertainment for people, and it also helps boost a country's economy.
The government's spending on arts is justified as it provides, in many forms, entertainment to the masses in forms of movies, music concerts or arts exhibitions. Arts in many forms is considered, by many, as a source of relaxation and entertainment and by funding the construction /establishment of more theaters, arts galleries and concert halls, the government is creating more sources of entertainment and relaxation for the public. This in turn has a positive impact on people's mental health and productivity. Such places allows for more opportunities of social interactions and lead to social harmony.
Moreover, allocating funds for the development of arts helps the economy. Performing arts such as theater, movies or dramas generate a lot of jobs. For example, making a movie requires employing hundreds of people like actors, cinematographers, video editors, directors etc. So, if government provides incentives creating movies then it means it is creating more jobs indirectly. Similarly many countries use arts to attract foreign and local tourists. A good example would be the annual Chilam Josh, a traditional dance festival, in our country which attracts thousands of international and local tourists each year. This not only boosts local economy but also creates jobs as well.
In conclusion, allocating funds to develop arts in any form is not a waste of money as it not only provides much needed entertainment to public but also helps the economy.
