IELTS writing task 2

Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause severe social problems as well as practical problems.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

My answer

In modern era, people need to migrate overseas for many reasons and thus, language barrier plays a vital role in their life. It is often said that being not able to speak a foreign language properly can cause serious consequences in their life. I would agree with the above line and this essay will give explanations.

Undoubtedly, in a foreign land, local language is the easiest mode of communication with native speakers, failing that can cause a number of problems. To start with, it would be difficult to communicate with local people in day-to-day life. For instance, it is likely to be very hard to choose a dish to savour in a foreign restaurant. As a consequence, quality of life appears not to be that great while you are not able to interact in local language. Another point to mention is, people coming to a foreign country and poor in speaking foreign language, usually stay in small enclave together , making their community. As a result they can not make new friends and face discrimination .That can lead to unemployment, violence, or even terrorism amoung youth.

In regards to professional life, one may face difficulties in interacting with their immediate higher authority in a new country. This could hinder their career progress, especially when job market is competitive. Additionally, While working in a team, being not able to communicate properly within the team, might destroy the team spirit and the foreign tend to feel isolated. So, overall it appears that people who can not overcome the difference in language, are bound to face some difficuties in their life in a foreign land.

Admittedly, living in a new country will open an ocean of opportunity to anyone and technological advancement has made it easier to overcome the language barrier, nevertheless , one has to struggle with language problem in their initial days in a new place.

In conclusion, although modern era has given us a number of ways to pass the obstacle of foreign language, it still tends to cause few social and practical issues when people change their habitat.

You must repeat the subject to avoid this: "They can not make friends and (they) will probably face discrimination." ) discrimination .That can lead to unemployment, violence, or even terrorism amoung youth. (I don't understand your logic here. Please explain a little more. Give a specific example from your own experience.)

At the present time, the population of some countries includes a relatively large number of young adults, compared with the number of older people.

Do the advantages of this situation outweigh the disadvantages?

In some countries there are now too many young people. Some believe that it is beneficial, but others argue that it can be ideal to have balance between younger and older generation. There can be both advantages and disadvantages of this situation, but I believe that it is still more positive than negative.

On the one hand, having more young adults can be a big challenge either for themselves or for notion. While the rising of young people happend, there will be an increasing number of unemployment rates. Take a competitive job market for instance, the number of teenagers can hardly find a job as they have to compete with other young generation. This will therefore lead to the influx of joblessness. In addition, the productive age can become burden to educational systems, and this will push the Government to provide more funds and strategies to support their education.

On the other hand, the are several advantages in the change of population for young people. Firstly, young ages are well-known as creative and energic who can potentially become a change maker. There are certainly numerous creative economy bussiness managed by young generation which are successful. Secondly, their appearances are able to boost the economic development for their country. The figures for productive workforce will increase significantly, and it eventually generates more Gross Domestic Products. Finally, young ages are beneficial in lowering burden of healthcare system. As there is a considerable decrease of people who suffering from degenerative diseases.

In conclusion, I believe that the more young adults will bring colourful impact in many ways in better future economy and health issue.

There is no doubt that luck knowledge of language can bring problems in the foreign land. Not being able to speak the native language can affect your ability to socialize and make friends. It can also affect your work efficiency because you will be not able to give or take instructions. Going shopping, getting medical help or asking for directions can be equally challenging for someone who does not speak or understand the native language. Luck of language efficiency can cause fear to affix your signature on an important documents. It bring you to situation where you will need licence translation all of them to be sure what you sign for. Or affix your signature on the important documents that you neither understand nor read may bring consequences, even, deplorable after-effects such as departure sentence, that will be tragedy.

Another example can be accurate understanding of spoken language, it can arise misunderstanding between you and residents and led to fear of any contacts. That is why some people from the same country try to live together and create their own community where native language are kept. Although you achieved high knowledge of their language, even than, it can lead to obstacles to understand their humour due to cultural difference.

This essay discussed why the speaking foreign language can cause serious social problems, such as work with documents, language isolation et cetera, and also practical problems, like asking for directions or getting medical help etc. In my opinion, I completely agree with what is statement about and, I strongly believe that it is no easy to persevere with foreign language but it certainly beneficial.

What can be done to help reduce the amount of rubbish produced.

Generating an increasing amount of waste has posed serious problems to governments. There are a number of causes that can be attributed to the proliferation of garbage, but measures can be definitely taken to tackle this alarming increase.

To begin with, the staggering rise of population and industrialization has resulted in the growth of market demands. The increase in the manufacture of commodities and rivalry among industries to produce goods, may be the reasons behind growing consumerism culture. For instance, repairing an old TV is not an option anymore. People discard old things in working condition, as soon as a new model hits the market. Goods are not made to last. Another issue is the production of non-biodegradable plastic and polythene materials. This can be illustrated by plastic bags, packaging and plastic cutleries which are used everywhere, from little restaurants at the corner of the street to airline catering. While people toss a useful food container or toy into the trash, those things inevitably end up in ever-growing landfills. This leads to devastation of agricultural lands and environmental degradation.

To counter the problems mentioned above, governments can fight this menace. Firstly, they should enforce companies to produce durable items, which can be used for longer duration. In case of raising awareness, authorities could launch publicity campaigns to educate people in order to promote recycling and reusing culture. Tax incentives are effective measures for upcycling and thrifty schemes, for these methods save energy and raw materials as well. To solve plastic issue, governments should enact stringent laws for packaging and make clear regulation for companies. Likewise, Imposing heavy taxes on plastic goods, limits the use of them for individuals.

To conclude, People are neither concerned nor aware of the impact of their action on the environment and their planet. So, governments and people both should take responsibility for this accumulated waste and act to address this problem.

It is a matter of fact that learning a foreign language is inevitable if one wants to reside or settle in another country which has its own language. However,when people migrate to foreign land they have to face several difficulties related to language which affect their social and practical lives. In my opinion, such problems are ought to come in their journey of settling to a new country.

To begin with, there will be a difficulty in understanding the way locals communicate with each other. The barrier of getting used to a particular language can take up to several months. During that time, a non native person may get embarrassed and feel awkward in different situations. Moreover, he cannot converse properly with his colleagues and neighbours, and therefore feel secluded from the surroundings. For instance, a foreign student with little knowledge about German, studying at a university in Germany may find it difficult to cope up with their classmates as well as their instructors, which may lead him to depression.

On the other hand, there are various practical issues which new migrants might have to tackle. Firstly, people would not be able to easily understand different rules which are necessary in their day to day life such as traffic and driving rules. To elaborate, they might get lost or misguided if they do not understand banners and signs on roads. Secondly, while buying a new product from a shopping mall or general stores, a person is more likely to get confused in selection of appropriate product. To cite an example, a customer will find difficulty in reading and understanding the user manual of different products and face problems related to its usage.

In conclusion, staying in another country will obviously bring several social and practical problems, but they can be minimized with time and certain preparations.
