Ie, eg ... incorrect to use 'etc' or 'and so forth' after them?

Why is it wrong to use 'etc' or 'and so on/and so forth' after 'ie' and 'eg'? At least I was told this, anyway.

Are these wrong?

She brought the essentials (eg rulers, protractors, etc).

Is it also incorrect to use 'etc' after 'ie'? So that I understand, why is it incorrect to use 'etc', 'and so forth', 'and the like' after 'eg' and 'ie'?
