Idioms (break up / break off)

Idioms always drive me crazy. Emotion: crying
It's really difficult for me to understand the differences.

Break up / break off
Could you please explain the difference between the two?

yes you are right with your assumption that it was thieves that broke into the coffee shop.

However, there is another use of "broken into" -

We were standing in the foyer when suddenly a group of singers had broken into song.

I this case, it means "they

break up is to be broken apart, to break into separate parts

break off is to break a part off but not completely apart

break up and break off are both to break into separate parts, but you can think of break up as more equal parts (break up the bread into 2 equal pieces), where break off would be into unequal parts (break off a small piece of bread)
