Idiom: same old same old
Hi guys,
I finally found some time to finish my "for fun" translation of the episode of Monk. I have just one problem. It's from the end part of the great and funny story where Mr.Monk figured out the case of dead of the Lt.commander on the submarine...Now the context: Mr.Monk is comming out from that submarine when he meets Lt.Disher...
Lt.Disher: Wow, you really were on a submarine.
Mr.Monk: Yeah.
Lt.Disher: How was that?
Mr.Monk: It was...Was Kinda horrifying. I was scared to death every minute.
Lt.Disher: Same old, same old?
Mr.Monk: Pretty much.
Lt.Disher: Okay, I'm gonna go check out the sub.
Again, I found the definition of this idiom ("used to say that a situation or someone's behaviour remains the same")...But I'm not 100% sure whether I understand the meaning here...Please is he saying...
a) So you stayed scared to death during the whole sail?
b) So you're still the person with an accute claustrofobia, with the fear from the confined space?
(Monk has exactly these problems)

There are several versions of this same sentiment. " It's probably used in this particular case for its irony. " BTW, I note that the definition you quoted mentions that the routine does not change, but does not metion the aspect of extreme boredom.

There are several versions of this same sentiment. The one that's been most popular for the last 20 years, is S.S.D.D., or "Same sh**, different day."
It's probably used in this particular case for its irony.
That is, he's describing extreme stress, which would be in many ways opposite from the extreme boredom aluded to in "sameol' sameol'."
