idiom - as good as it gets?

Hi people!

This idiom has been going round my head in the last few weeks, and still I don't seem to grasp its actual meaning. Could you please clarify the meaning and provide some examples within a context?

Thanks a lot!

Mara.

I was expecting there to be more people at this dance party, and I was hoping there would be more nice ladies/gentlemen for me to meet. Is this as good as it WILL get? Yes kid, this is as good as it gets .

"This is as good as it gets."
The situation is not going to improve (get better). The situation -- as it is now -- is the best it can be. Stop hoping that it will improve, because you are just going to be disappointed.

Cf. "It doesn't get much better than this", which seems to be the positive version:

"I was expecting all the guests to be boring middle-aged men. And what do I find? Thirty-three young and attractive females – and not another male in sight. It doesn't get much better than this..."

(Meanwhile, the 33 females are looking at the speaker and thinking, hmm; is this as good as it gets?
