Idiom about self-punishment

I learned an idiom about self-flagellation. It is a religious fugerative term that someone wears an attire with thorns inside as a self- punishment.

I forgot what it is exactly.

Do you know it?

Thanks!

flagellation usually refers to whipping or beating. I would describe what you are talking about as mortification (of the flesh) . These terms can of course be used figuratively as well as literally.

Thank your for your attention, Clive. Sorry, probably I was unable to make myself clear because of my limitted language. A little bird has suggested it would be "hair shirt" which was exactly the idiom I was fumbling for. Have a good one!
