Identifying sentence errors

Hi,

there is a multiple-choice question that asks for the error in the sentence.

Their standard of living is still higher than that of the other countries in the world.

A) 1st underlined expression

B) 2nd underlined expression

C) 3rd underlined expression

D) No error

Even if you can tell the grammatical rule or giving me a thread, I'll search and study the related subject..

Thank you very much in advance,

Emad

As a native speaker, I would say letter D as well. Emotion: smile

I guess that's why I said I'd choose D. To me, the term "that of" refers to the word standard which is singular. Their standard of living is still higher than that standard of living of the other countries in the world. One standard, many countries.

chalkbrdOne standard, many countries.
Is that plausible, though? Wouldn't each country have its own standard of living?

Compare:

The tail of this dog is longer than that?/those? of other dogs.

While that might be true that each country has its own standard of living, this particular sentence gives the idea that they are being lumped together as one unit. It's a little different than the tails and dogs. Let's remove the "that/those" issue for a moment.

Original: Their standard of living is still higher than that of the other countries in the world.

Hi,

It seems to me that 'the standard of living of the other countries ' is inviting me to try to mentally 'average out' the standard of living in China + the standard of living in France + the standard of living in Somalia, etc.

I would prefer to reword the sentence more naturall
