The world is full of examples using "they" (their, them) like this. It was full of examples in the 1700 and 1800s. There was a weird time when it was suggested that "he/his/him" should be used instead, and that lasted for over 100 years, but now we are back to "they/their/them" as gender-neutral, singular, third-person pronoun.
