I read "the gauges" as direct object of the verb "checked," and "carefully" as an adverb modifier of the whole sentence (or at least of the main verb "checked").

Well, objects are a type of complement, so in that respect the direct object "the gauges" is a complement. The adverb "carefully" is not a complement, but a manner adjunct (adverbial) modifiyng the verb "checked".
