Identifying an English grammar error by my Chinese student.

Hi, I have a Chinese student learning English and I am trying to identify an error she made in order to correct it. The error is ... she said...how can say? instead of how can I say.

She said...Live in English speaker country. Instead of English speaking coiuntry.

I am writing up a student profile and need to accurately identify the error and suggest an excercise to correct it, can you help? Any advice musch appreciated.

Thanking you,

Frances

As it is a single Ss, I would personally let them so this exercise as homework. Therefore one of the self-study books like 'English Grammar in Use by Raymond Murphy (CUP)' would be my choice. There are a few different types of these books but Murphy is the easiest to find with the quality of explanations and practice required.

  • You may want to find out how they express that in whichever Chinese language she speaks.
  • Is it an L1 interference problem or a over-generalising problem?

It would be better if you treated it as a complete sentence. At least, "How can I say this?"

Her version has no subject. And it's supposed to be a question.

English learners often neglect to change the order for a question: "How I can say this?"
