Identify with vs relate to

Hi

Would you say that identify with and relate to are essentially synonymous?

I couldn't relate to any of the characters mentioned in her book.

I couldn't identify with any of the characters mentioned in her book.

Also, could you tell me if this sentence is correct (and is good register)?

No matter how sensible she may sound, to me, her problems always seem well-exaggerated. I can't relate to any of them.

Thanks,

Tom
