Do you think this is a negative or positive development?

Positive:

Foreign tourists will feel very comfortable if they can get things that they are accustomed to. They will feel at home in a foreign country. It is beneficial for the tourist trade and also for expatriate workers.

Global competition assures that the best products with competitive prices will be available to everyone.

Products of convenience, such as microwave ovens, can be purchased in countries where there is no local manufacturing. These products save people time and effort and improve their standard of living. The standard of living will be raised in poorer countries to match those in richer countries.

Products with the latest technology, common in developed countries, will be available in developing countries, so the people there can improve their quality of life, standard of living and the economy.

If people buy online, the goods need to be delivered. This will be very good for certain businesses in the transportation sector.

Negative:

Local traditions and customs will disappear as young people prefer western goods, such as clothes and accessories. It is an added incentive for young people to abandon their culture.

Local manufacturers do not have the economy of scale of international manufacturers, so they cannot compete on the basis of cost. They will go out of business, and their employees will be out of work.

Local shops will also decline as they have to compete with on-line shopping malls.

The increased demand for global transport and delivery services will increase the use of vehicles that burn fossil fuels and contribute to global warming. Aircraft flying long-distance routes are major culprits. Local delivery vehicles contribute to local air pollution.
