Id' rather you didn't/I'd rathernot: what's the difference?

Hello!
Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between "I'd rather you didn't" and "I'd rather not"?
If someone asked you "Do you mind if I open the window", could you reply "I'd rather not" or would you have to say "I'd rather you didn't?" Or are both forms correct?
Thanks in advance!

I'd rather you didn't means that the speaker does not wish the other person to do something. I'd rather not means that the speaker does not wish to do something. Only the first is appropriate in your situation.
