I'd rather you

Hello,

I came across a sentence "I would rather you sat down over there." the other day, and my initial reaction was #¤&%4£@¤%!*?!!!!!!!!!!
How does that sentence make any sense?

It's as stupid as it is to say:
"I would preferably you sat down over there."

You wouldn't say this, would you?

So could anyone break it down and elaborate for me and explain how this works?
And why is there no verb between "rather" and pronoun as in:
" I would rather HAVE you sit down over there."
Since when has the word rather become a verb?

Thank you!

" How does that sentence make any sense? It is a fine sentence. " That is bad English.
