"I'd rather he be angry than grumpy."

Is this sentence grammatically correct?

"I'd rather he be angry than grumpy."

But as far as I know, past tense verbs follow the 'would rather' phrase, so I am really confused now.

ex) I'd rather you went home now.

The meanings are understood to be the same, but it makes (more) sense to use the present-tense verb. After all, the sentences are talking about something that hasn't yet happened.

I'd rather he were angry angry rather than grumpy . This is fine. We use the so-called past subjunctive to denote that the situation desired is counterfactual. These are similar constructions:

I'd be happier if he were angry.
I wish he were angry.
