ID in GB and USA???

0 Hi you all! 02br
00A colleague of mine says that people in Great Britain and the USA 01b00do not have02b00 identification documents (other than a driving licence)! I simply cannot believe it. Is that true? Anybody from GB and the USA (without a driving licence) - do you have an ID card/passport/anything? When you go to the polls, how are they sure you don't vote twice? 02br

S. Most people, of course, have a driver's licence, and if you don't drive you can get an ID card from your state of residence that is similar to a driver's licence, but just for purposes of identification. You only need a passport if you are going abroad.

  • In the wake of 9/11 there has been some talk of insituting a national identity card, but there would be a lot of opposition to it.

0Miche - I forgot to add, we also have Social Security Numbers, which are issued soon after birth and act as an identification number for federal (national) government purposes (like income tax) and, increasingly, for other purposes. In fact, I recently noticed that it has become so commonly asked for that people no longer say, "What's your Social Security Number," but just "what's your social?

0We don't have a national ID card in New Zealand either. About the only real ID we have would be your driver's license. Now (over the last years) it has a photo. It is sometimes used/asked for at pubs to stop young people using their older brother's/sister's license to get in..02br

00Knoff, sorry for delaying my answer. I live in Bulgaria (I don't think many people know it). It is a small country on the Balkan Peninsula in Europe (111,000 sq. km all in all). It was a communist state (a USSR satellite), which probably explains the bulk of IDs we have. On the one hand, we don't yet have a centralsed information sy
