Letter Writing

I'd appreciate it if you could this paragraph.

When you lived with your family, you may have felt that everything was taken care of automatically. But in fact, your mother did cook and do the laundry for you. Your mother is not the kind of person who tells you to appreciate what she does for you. So I suppose you didn't realize how much she saved you a lot of time and trouble until you started to live on your own.

I agree completely with the grammatical corrections, but it's risky to tell people what kind of person their own mother was. How would you know? Maybe that person has a mother who frequently reminds them she's not their maid.

If your mother never pointed out how much she did for you, you probably didn't appreciate how much time and trouble she saved you until you started to live on your

BarbaraPAbut it's risky to tell people what kind of person their own mother was.
I read it as the father talking to his disrespectful unappreciative son or daughter.

Ah! That makes perfect sense.

Thank you very much, both for your corrections and great ideas :-) This is a translation exercise, so it's hard to tell whether the writer is actually a mother or a father, but it's very interesting to think about him or her :-)

So I suppose you didn't realize how much a lot of time and trouble she saved you until you started to live on your own.

Could I ask another question related to this sentence? You didn't realize how much time and trouble she had saved/saved you until you started to live on your own. Should I use "had saved" here instead of "saved?" I can just leave it as it is?

Use "saved."
"saved" refers to the amount of time and effort on each one of years of days.

"had saved" implies you are considering all the time and effort as one lump. To me, it's less effective.
