Please let's have a look at the two sentences:
1) I would rather be a failure doing something I love than be a success doing something I hate.
2) I would rather fail doing something I love than succeed doing something I hate.
- Are both completely interchangeable?
- Is any of them more natural?
- Can we exchange 'something' for 'what'?
They sound OK to me, and they seem to mean the same thing, basically. "What" would sound a little odd in "doing what I hate".
