NEW TECHNOLOGY AND RELATIONSHIPS

We invite you, our readers, to submit an article on new technology (e.g. mobile phone, the

Internet, Facebook) and how it affects young people’s relationships with family and friends. We will publish one article from each country. You should also make some suggestions on how young people can eliminate the negative impact of technology on their relationships.

Write your article. Write approximately 220 – 260 words.

Adolescents, unlike previous generations, were born in the digital age and are among the most tech-savvy and early adopters of new technologies. However, of concern is the fact that this exceptionally results in dramatic technology addiction in youth. What circumstances have contributed to this issue, and how it mainly influences interpersonal relationships?

The advance of technology allows for convenient interactions between friends and family regardless of location. Nonetheless, while people remain social through communicating at a constant rate, the essence of face-to-face interactions is in part affected.

“You lose intimacy when you’re not together.” (Herchlain 2014). The most significant aspect of face-to-face communication is the ability to empathize. The more eye-to-eye interactions people have, the better understanding they have. Only when we communicate face to face, can our sentimental feelings be fully conveyed and touched. In interpersonal zones, open and honest communication is critical to trust and develop a strong bond. That is why digital communication can be impalpable to thoroughly comprehend family members’ and friends’ feelings without seeing their expressly lucid facial expressions and gestures.

Technology, furthermore, is a big distraction in a relationship. With the infinite amount of time on electronic devices, the young’s attention is absorbed, resulting in a loss in face-to-face interrelationships such as the adolescent-parent and friends associations. The frequent use of socially interactive devices diminishes the desire for direct engagement. It is a noticeable fact that nowadays in restaurants, many friends groups or family members glue their eyes on the phone instead of talking to each other even though they are genuine together. Specifically, the young seem to hesitate to hang out with friends and lose interest in having conversations with their parents. People are so fixed on technology that decreases interaction, which can then cause worse distance and misunderstanding.

Technological advances undoubtedly bring immense convenience for the youth; nevertheless, excessive usage of electronic gadgets may lead to a neglect of the interactions and even deterioration of real-life connections with family and friends. Hence, adolescents should recognize the beneficial uses of technology in relationships then maintain them efficiently through the implementation of rules and regulations to support vital bonds.
