Nowadays, there is a trend that reports of media focus on problems and emergencies rather than a positive development. Some people think it is harmful to individuals and to society. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is undeniable that social media platforms and paper publications are mostly covered by bad news reports. While some people claim that it does a disservice to individuals and society, I opine that both negative and positive news play an indispensable part in our daily life.
On the one hand, excessive exposure to bad news brings drawbacks to readers. First, it takes a toll on their health. People have suffered enough from life associated with responsibilities and pressure, not to mention coming across dramatic articles about fatal accidents or natural disaster consequences. Not only do those articles offer readers a pessimistic view of life, but they also end up leading some of them to depression. Secondly, negative news is often blown out of proportion, which results in trust issues in everything these days. For instance, planes are statistically speaking the safest means of transport. However, headlines plane crashes always capture worldwide attention and thus discourage enormous numbers of potential airline passengers.
On the other hand, I assume that negative news reports worth the attention. For ages, the press acts as a reflection of social reality as well as individuals' vocals. The fact that appalling articles garner a great deal of publicity might help boost the process of resolving problems such as asking for justice for people or invoking the authorities to do something. Last but not least, sensational stories are of paramount importance for raising everyone's awareness about what is going on in nowadays society. Those reports urge people to be more guarded and take adequate precautions to prevent themselves from being victims. Since reports of sexual harassment proliferate, more women tend to carry around pepper sprays for self-defense.
In conclusion, while negative media coverage does harm people in some aspects, I claim that it is essential to update them on a frequent basis.
