I wonder why?

The ultimate goal of learning another language is to become familiar with

1) the thinking and way of life of its speakers.
2) the thoughts and lifestyles of its speakers.

My book has these two sample answers, and I wonder why 1) uses way of life as the singular and 2) uses lifestyles as the plural.
I understand that "thinking" in this case is used as an uncountable noun as in "positive thinking or critical thinking." However, I have trouble understanding why it doesn't say "ways of life" though my dictionary lists the plural form of the term.

Top answer

I suppose the goal has a particular group in mind. This group has a common culture, one universal "way of life" and one universal mode of thinking. Lifestyle refers to the individual social strata within the group, not the group collective.

  • I think #2 is the more appropriate answer.
