I wonder that you were able to escape.

Hi teachers.

This sentence is from my grammar book and I am kind of surprised because it say "I wonder that~" not "I wonder whether~"

So, it is acceptable and grammatical to say like #1?


1. I wonder that you were able to escape.

It means

I feel amazed (filled with wonder) that you were able to escape.
