I wish plus past perfect

Please look at the following underlined quote - Clapton wrote later in his autobiography that he and Allman were inseparable during the sessions in Florida; he talked about Allman as the "musical brother I'd never had but wished I did Is it the same as "I wish I had a musical brother but I have never had him" Why is past perfect used in the original? Thanks a lot
