Hmm, may I know why you used 'were' in the above sentence? Can't I use 'is' (present tense)?

Thanks.

No, you can't use 'is'. It's Subjunctive, Spectacled-Girl.

PaulioNo, you can't use 'is'. It's Subjunctive, Spectacled-Girl.
I don't understand the word 'Subjunctive'..

Do you mean that if a sentence 'If...', I should use 'was', 'were'?

And, which of these is correct?

If he was/were my friend...

Sorry to trouble you..Thanks..

If he was/were my friend...

Correct sentences :

If he were my friend, I would help him.

If she were my wife, I would be happy.

I don't about subjunctive, but the sentences are conditional statements, and in such statements we should write `were' instead of `was' as far as I know.
