I will watch "careful" (not carefully)

Which is correct, the adverb or adjective modifier?

An old war movie was on last week. An English officer told a German officer that it was his men's duty to try to escape. The German officer replied:

"Then I will have to watch them careful.".
At first I thought that as a German, his English must be bad since he said "careful" instead of the correct "carefully". However, I then remembered that any verb describing one of the five senses is know as a linking verb. Linking verbs take the adjective rather than adverb as a modifier.

So my question, is "I will watch them careful" actually correct or "I will watch them carefully"
Thanks,
DJ
