I've never heard it, idiomatically or literally.

We sometimes hear that a person "doesn't eat enough to keep a bird alive", meaning that they don't eat very much. [And, it is my understanding that the reference isn't very accurate, because birds eat more, in proportion to their body weight, than do humans.]
