I was/had been sick until yesterday

I have made up the example below.

(1) I was sick until yesterday. So, I am back at work today.

My non-native English speaking friends think the past simple is wrong. They revised it to make (2) below.

(2) I had been sick until yesterday. So, I am back at work today.

I think it's correct to use the past simple because my being sick occurred in the recent past. It is followed by my plan to go back to work today.

Who is correct? Please help me. Thank you very much.

Your use of the simple past is correct. There is no reason to use the past perfect. The past perfect is used to express a past event that happened before some other past event.

I had called you ten times before you finally answered me. (The calling took place before the answering. They are both in the past.)
