I was wondering or I am wondering in a phone call

When making a phone call, which of these shall say?
"I was wondering if it would be possible to have Mary paged."
"I am wondering if it would be ...."

I heard a lot of the first one. But I think the second makes sense much more because I am wondering that when making that call. What do you say about this?

Thanks.

'I was wondering' is a slightly more polite form of 'I am wondering'. The first is a shortened form of 'I was wondering [if you were willing to do so] if it would be possible to have Mary paged'.
