I was wondering if...is a polite way of asking now?

I have learned that I was wondering if...is a polite way of asking now. ex) I was wondering if you can help me out.

And then how about these ones?

He knew that I was wondering if you could help me out.

I was wondering if you were at school.

Is this a polite way of asking as well or tense agreement?

What do you native English speakers think? Thank you so much as usual in advance.

Tense agreement is ok. But it is strange to be seen in indirect speech. Usually it introduces a request for a favor.
