I was wondering if you wanted to go with her.

I know that 'I was wondering if..' can be used for a present meaning and then verbs followed by 'was wondering if' should be in past forms like

I was wondering if you wanted to go with her.

And the meaning of the sentence is related to the present or past or both, depending on context?

What do you native English speakers think?

Thank you so much as usual.
