I was wondering...

This is part of the lyrics from a song called "I was sorta wonderin" By Les "Carrot Top" Anderson.

"I was sort of wondering if you missed me tonight; wondering if you feel the way I do".

Why is the past simple used at first but then we see the present simple afterwards?
What would we normally use after "I was wondering .."?

1) Hey, I was sort of wondering if you like me.
or
2) Hey, I was sort of wondering if you liked me.

Are both correct? Which is better? Thank you so much!

Necrophagist Why is the past simple used at first but then we see the present simple afterwards? It is possible that he is referring to an event that she went to but not him. It is also possible he meant that her missing him is conditional and in the past, and his feeling the way he does is present.
