I was to have started work last week

Hi.
Would you use a sentence, either in speech or in writing, like the one below?

I was to have started work last week, but I changed my mind.

I would never use something like this, more something like I should have started work... But is the first ever used? Doesn't it sound dated and affected?

Thanks
