Can you tell me if this sentence is correct?

I was thinking if you could go to the cinema with me.

OR "I was thinking that you and I should go to the cinema tonight."

It doesn't work in a sentence, as far as I know.

It really needs a "that."
I was thinking that if we pool our resources we can afford a new car.
In my opinion, the "that" cannot be omitted.

You sometimes hear it in very casual conversation. I'm not sure how you would punctuate it, but I'll use a colon:
I was [just] thinking: if you call in sick t
