I was solving a grammar exercise, when I came across this sentence.

INCORRECT : On attempting to restore the picture, an irreparable damage was discovered.

CORRECT : On our attempting to restore the picture, an irreparable damage was discovered.

Can anyone explain why this is so?

But isn't damage here countable? "An" indicates that the damage is singular.Please correct me if I'm wrong.

No, it's not countable. eg You can't say 'two damages'.
