"I was sat there"

I leave a table then return to find someone else in my seat is it correct to say to that person "I was sat there" ?

"I was sitting there" would be more common.

As a British Canadian, I would say 'Sorry, I was sitting there'.
The 'sorry'. makes it much more friendly and low-key.

no I would say " Sorry I was sitting there"

It might be correct if it were the case that somebody, such as an usher for instance, had instructed you to sit there and you were trying to convey the notion that you were not sitting there of your own volition. You might say: 'I was sat there by the usher but I didn't like the seat, so I have moved here.' Otherwise it would be correct to say "I was sitting there"
