I was or I were

As I found my volunteering experience to be more and more rewarding, I realized that if I was going to make this change, I had to devote myself fully once again.

One of my friends told me it should "... if I were going to make this change..."

Which one is correct?

In that sentence as it stands, 'were' is acceptable. Indeed it is the only correct form for some people.

However, in I realized that if I was going to make this change, I had to devote myself fully once again, we are dealing with a reporting of the realization "If I am goin
