I was or I were

I'm not sure wich one is correct, Could you please help me

Top answer

Both are correct, but for past simple sentences only "was" is correct. I was very happy to see my friends. I were is the subjunctive form, and it is mainly used in conditional sentences such as: If I were you, I wouldn't answer the phone.

"Were" Is only used for Past. Like " If i were you" I would not drive a car with out a licence. It wont be right if you say " If i was you", i would not drive a car with out a licence.
