Can I rephrase this paragraph
I was not, as you may imagine, one of the most backward in my scrutinizing inspection. I did not neglect the least corner: and nevertheless, finding no possibility of its concealing anything the size of my hat, my self-love was terribly hurt at seeing a conjecture vanish, which at first appeared to me so ingenious.
like this:
I inspected it as closely as I could and you would imagine. I did not lose any corner of it. Nevertheless, there was no possibility for hiding even a thing the size of a hat there. When my hypotheses and assumptions, that sounded clever enough, did not work, I felt so foolish.

"I was not ... one of the most backward in my scrutinizing inspection" means that he was thorough in his inspection compared to other people. "... as you may imagine ..." means that the reader could probably guess this (based, presumably, on a prior knowledge of what kind of person he was).
