I was looking or I am looking?

Hi,

I am always confused in the following situations as which one to be used.

1. Did you tell him that I am looking for a driver?
2. Did you tell him that I was looking for a driver?

Can you help me?

Thanks a lot!

In my dialect, if you are still looking for a driver, the two sentences are interchangeable. People say one or the other as the mood strikes them. The upshot of that is that you can always use the one that seems logical, which is good for formal writing, too (number 1).
