"I was just wondering if you remember whether you had given me back the highlighter I lent you the other day or not?"

Hi all

"I was just wondering if you remember whether you had given me back the highlighter I lent you the other day or not?"

Is this a natural way to remind somebody who you are not familiar with to return a piece of stationary borrowed from you? How could I make it sound nicer and more tentative? Although I am certain that she had clearly forgotten about it.

Thank you

It's polite enough, but too formal and drawn-out. Simple is better: " Say, did you give me back the highlighter I lent you the other day? " .
