I want to teach my child

Hello

My child is 'slow learner', though he is good at english and sometimes he surprises me, but at times I get confused, which way I should teach him the grammer so he can understand very well. e.g. how do I teach him the difference in using : their/there, hear/here, etc.

I am from India, and I am hook,line.sinker for this site, just too good.........

How old is your child? Sometimes age can make a difference in the teaching method to use.

I would say that children learn faster by doing things they are interested in: by watching their favourite film in English, by playing their playstation or gameboy games in English, by reading in English. Computer games also interest them. As far as grammar, as many games as possible, combined with some grammar rules and vocab. They also like singing and listening to songs.

As Maj said, GAMES.
Games are the best way to learn, especially at younger ages as the kids WANT to participate more and become involved. They only see a game, though behind it there is actually some type of logical learning process. Child Psychology is not one of my strengths, though from personal experiences, Games produce very good results, and best of all they enjoy them.
If you try to give too much grammar or reading to a 'slow learner', they tend to get frustrated (or bored) and may just give up/stop trying.
Make little cards with words and pictures on them, try mix and match activities, have dice handy, get your child to cut out certain words or sentences from an English Magazine or newspaper and play around with those, also there are many great interactive games sites on Internet if you have easy access to a computer. Avoid the typical whiteboard classes.

Hi Sur, I hope this isn't too much, but I felt it might help:

I did a "little" Child Psychology, it depends what you mean by 'slow learner'. Regardless, the advice of Maj and Woodward falls along most currently adopted theories.

You should exercise patience, that can be tough on you, and take things at his/her own pace. Celebrate achievements and don't focus on failures too much.

Having fun while learning is, without a doubt, the best way forward for any child.

Should the reasons for your child's "slower learning" not be understood already; It may be wise to investigate. Identifying conditions such as dyslexia, or a.d.d as soon as possible can make all the difference and counsellors will be able to advise you on the best learning strategies.

Also, should a condition be known, it is important for the parent to REGULARLY interact with the child's teachers. Teachers tend to spend a great deal of time with the student, and problems can arise in class if the teachers are unaware of the situation.

Don't be afraid to talk about it with your child.

as hitch wants to know / understand the reasons for his being a 'slow learner', well, I would like your permission to post an article written by me, which is self explantory.
please don't miss understand me, i am not here to publicize any treatment method or not here to gain any sympathy, i am here to get a guidence from the learned teachers like you all.
only if you permit i will post this article, but one thing is sure, this one is written for the indian people, you may find this strange, but let me tell you, here people shy away from accepting that they have a 'special need child'. none wants to be a target of 'lip sympathy' and i have written my experience to 'create an awareness' among the people. well, it may apply to you also. i wouldn't know.
