I wanna know the subject of this phrase...

"Standing in the middle of the exhibition hall, surrounded by Korean art, I could not stop thinking about Kansong."

In the above sentence, I wanna know the subject of "surrounded".

Is it "I" or "the exhibition hall"? it's really confusing.

Top answer

The exhibition hall would not be surrounded (encircled) by Korean art. That sounds like the art was on the outside of the exhibition hall, like an army around a fort they are about to attack. I is the subject of 'standing' and the subject of 'surrounded'.
