I usually get confused over the use of 'kind' and 'type'. To me both seems pretty much interchangable without affecting the meaning. e.g "What other movies of this type/kind can you think of?", "I don't like this kind/type of people". Which one of them should be used in such contexts, is there any thumb rule to know when to which? Please guide me.

I'd say they are pretty much interchangeable, can't find a situation where you would use one over the other.
