I used vs I had used

Dear teachers

Is this text correct English?

I am new to the XPT mobile phone. I just upgraded from an HYT that I used almost everyday since 2001.

I believe there should be 'had' between 'I' and 'used'.

It's better, but not necessary, to write "had used."

Don't confuse everyday (adjective) with every day (adverb).
