I used to smoke

0 Hello everyone,02br
02br
00I have this question here, regarding structures that we use when referring to past habits and costumes. 02br
00I know that we can use 01b00'used to + infinitive' 02b00without restrictions, that is, it can be used with both, verbs of state or with dynamic verbs (e.g. 01b00'I used to visit my grandmother.'02b00,01b00'I would visit my grandmother on Saturdays.' ' I used to believe in Father Christmas.'02b00)02br
00We can use 01b00'would + infinitive' 02b00with the same meaning but only with dynamic verbs (e.g. 01b00I would visit my grandmother every Saturday02b00.)02br
02br
00I understand that verbs of state are verbs of possession, belief, etc. and dynamic verbs are verbs of actions and are also verbs that can be imagined in the middle of happening. 02br
02br
00The point is that I read in a grammar book that you can say 01b00'I used to smoke.'02b00 but it is not acceptable to just say 01b00'I would smoke.'02b00 with the same meaning, unless you use an adverbial of frequency (e.g. 01b00I would smoke every time I was under a lot of stress.02b00) but 01b00'smoke'02b00 is an action so why is it not possible to use 01b00would02b00 with that meaning in that case? What does it depend on? Could you give me other examples of similar cases? Would it be incorrect to just say 01b00'I would watch cartoons'02b00 or 01b00'I would + any02b00 01b00other verb02b00 with a general meaning?02br
02br
00Thank you in advance for your help.02br

00I am correcting a mistake I made when I first posted this. I wrote costumes when I meant customs. 01font01b00It is so easy to miss mistakes when dealing with a problem that is not related to the mistake itself. You are a better proof-reader t
