I used play writer instead of playwright and was marked down?

Hello,

In a recent English exam I used "play writer" when giving information on the author, and was subsequently marked down on my Spelling Grammar and Punctuation (SPAG). I was wondering whether it it is completely wrong to use this term or if it is slightly subjective to use either playwright or play writer.

Many thanks,

-JV

PS. I did not make play writer one word

Jules Vermeeren (Admin) I was wondering whether it it is completely wrong to use this term It depends what you mean by 'wrong'. 'play writer' is virtually never used, whereas 'playwright' occurs much, much more often, and this has been true for more than a hundred years. See the Google Ngram at the link given below.
