I thought you would have gained lot of weight.

I'm seeing one of my friend after a long period. He is actually a gourmet. Can I ask 'I though you would have gained a lot of weight'. Is it ok?Any other better way to frame this sentence.

vts nair Can I ask 'I thought you would have gained a lot of weight'. Is it ok? Unless he is a very good friend indeed, that is a rude supposition to utter.
