I thought we weren't/ aren't ?

So this is the scenario:

Last night, my friend text me and asked me to go out today, but then when I asked him where he wanted to go, he didn't reply. Therefore, I go out with other friends today. And he text me today, ask me to go to the bookstore with him later. Now, which one is the correct usage?

Sorry, I thought we weren't going to meet, so..
or
Sorry, I thought we aren't going to meet...

Sorry, I thought we weren't going to meet, so... is correct. However, I think the second is also widely(!) used. So in short, if you wonder which one is gramatically correct, the first one is the answer you are looking for.

You can almost never go wrong if you use the past tense in the clause after "I thought" or "I knew".
