I thought we were out of gas, but [the car drives]

I thought we were out of gas, but the car drives.
[The example comes from my English reference book.]
I was wondering how can a car drive itself for itself.

It's not a very good sentence. More natural would be "I thought we were out of gas, but the car is still going."
